Brought together by the powers of the land and the wild forces of nature was this clan formed. We are told how, long ago, a forlorn group of elves gathered together in the dense woods, lost and abandoned by the rest of the race: misfits, half-breeds, elves whose beliefs simply were not accepted anywhere else. Yet within this gathering there was no connection, no kinship... they camped together simply because no one else would have them, and their fellowship was empty, for they had never known acceptance in their race, and so did not know how to extend it to others.
As this lost band of elves adapted to a primitive sort of life in the forest, each one alone in a crowd, they became aware of the presence of a pack of wolves which hunted their forest. They became fascinated by the brotherhood displayed by the wolves, their fierce loyalty to each other. Over time, the elves began to follow the wolves' example, and slowly they learned to extend the same kind of loyalty to the other members of the group.
When the ancient elven gods saw that they had finally begun to accept themselves and each other, they granted upon the group a deeper unity, a brotherhood, a friendship, and with this fellowship a united cause: because of the hospitality shown them by the forest spirits, they were always to maintain the balance of nature between themselves, the animals, the land, and the rest of the beings that inhabited the world. Yet the gods had also exacted a price: while the elves were finding their own fellowship, they had lost touch with the rest of the elven race and found themselves even more outcast, their ideals dismissed by the rest of the elven nation.
Though the other elves have always remained a part of the forest, none are so strongly bound to the woodland as the elves of Elspeth. They kept in sight their god-given quest to maintain the balance of nature, merging fire, air, earth, and water to protect the clan, sending forth hunters clad in armor and in green, and always followed in silence by the spirit of the wolf which had guided them to their brotherhood.
This awareness of nature, combined with the keen insight of their wolf totem, gave the clan a deep spirituality. They gradually faded into the background of elven society, preferring the company of their brothers or the quiet solitude of the forest to exploration and war. They opened their door to all who truly honored the spirit of Elspeth, teaching them to respect the balance of nature and their place in the world. These teachings had a simple thought: that all creatures are to have the opportunity to act out their roles in nature without abusing them, and that those who do abuse those roles are to be pitied.
The members of this clan tend to be quiet in nature, seeking contemplation, learning, and peace. However, the clan also displays its wolf spirit when its members are harmed. In packs they descend upon the one who has done them wrong, returning again to the peace of the forest when justice has been served.
Elspeth has relied on its strong faith in nature and balance to maintain its stability throughout the years. The brotherhood and unity granted by the gods has remained strong, seeing the clan safely through past and present conflicts. Elspeth remains true to its cause and to the wolf spirit which guided the clan to unity.
The crest of Clan Elspeth is green to symbolize the bond with the forest. The sacred wolf is displayed in silver, holding a set of golden scales in its right paw to represent the balance of nature. On a field vert, a wolf passant argent holding a balance.
